World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round but climax on 5th June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.
World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.
Through World Environment Day, the UN Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.
World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.
Everyone counts in this initiative and World Environment Day relies on you to make this happen! We call for action – organize a neighborhood clean-up, stop using plastic bags and get your community to do the same, plant a tree or better yet organize a collective tree planting effort, walk to work, start a recycling drive . . . the possibilities are endless and even the fashion industry is not exempted.
More and more designers are creating fashion with the environment in mind,"Going Green"basically."Going Green" which was Nigeria fashion week theme last year had designs from Modela , Charvid Fashion and Styles ,Theodara Dike,Beldies la mode, Chrystallix, monu and monu fashion who made clothes from recycled materials such as cotton, linen, fish shells, broken glasses, mat, bamboo ,nylon, paper etc.
They are a great find for those of us trying to save the environment and look stylish at the same time. The styles are sharp, fun and fresh. The product offerings range from flip flops and baby diapers to women's fashion and organic, environmentally friendly fashion accessories. Organic clothing is not just for women either, its for men, women and even children and babies.
Most importantly, creative people like fashion practitioners and other professionals need a healthy and sustainable environment to excel.
It is in recognition of this fact that the Legendary Gold Limited has joined the rest of the world to advocate for climate change through fashion. That was emphasized in the 2011th edition of Nigeria Fashion Week tagged "Going Green". The event attracted a lot of attention from the fashion industry and international press including coverage by CNN (CNN Video report on NFW 2011, CNN post on NFW 2011).
Following that success, Legendary Gold Limited has decided to organize Nigeria Fashion Week "Going Green 2". This year 's edition is going to be deeper in the matter of climate change with workshops, walks, tree planting exercises and much more.
To this effect we therefore acknowledge and associate with the World Environment Day that was celebrated last Tuesday here in Nigeria and all over the world.
